In their chapter ‘Practice Spotlight: How LGBTIQA+ Representation in Organisation Leadership Impacts Inclusivity and Visibility’ (2023), Andrea Bandelli—former Director of Science Gallery International—and Sarah Durcan, the current Executive Director, reflect on the importance of representation in leadership.

This spotlight focuses on how extensive LGBTIQA+ representation in an organization’s senior management team can influence workplace dynamics and science communication practices.

Drawing on the example of Science Gallery International, the spotlight describes how the Gallery’s senior management team and board influences their approach to science communication. The open, queer-positive dynamic of their workplace led to staff establishing the LGBTQ+ STEM Day that is now a worldwide initiative.
