In ‘Practice Spotlight: GENDERS: Shaping and Breaking the Binary’ (2023), Helen Kaplinsky and Jessie Krish reflect on the development of the GENDERS exhibition at Science Gallery London. The chapter appears in Queering Science Communication: Representations, Theory, and Practice, edited by Lindy A. Orthia and Tara Roberson, and published by Bristol University Press.
This spotlight is drawn from an exhibition on themes of queer ecology, gender expression, roleplay, and reproduction at the Science Gallery London entitled ‘GENDERS: Shaping and Breaking the Binary’. The exhibition included 18 contemporary artworks. Existing historical work was displayed alongside new commissions involving collaboration with researchers at King’s College London and activists working locally. The programme engaged a multidisciplinary entanglement of social and biological research. This exhibition foregrounded queer agency through artists’ reappropriation of scientific resources in their works.
